Day 4: Luke 7-8

  1. I find it interesting that Jesus tells many of the people he performs miracles for to not tell anyone. I could understand this if he was being crushed by crowds i assume. ross: where did you find such great actors and a boat like that? You need to talk to paramount and get this published.

  2. why where tax collectors looked down upon so much in that time

and in 8:32-33 why did the daemons beg to leave the man only to go into a pig and run off a cliff and drowned

i also find it interesting that Jesus would instruct the parents to not tell what they have seen, most likely because they didn't believe in him and started laughing after he said she is not dead but only asleep

  3. These are great questions Adam. Tax collectors were looked down upon by the people because tax collectors were basically agents of the Roman govt. Their job was to deliver a certain amount in taxes to the Romans. However, they could tax the citizens whatever they wanted and generally charged unfair taxes and kept the rest. The Roman govt. knew of this but they didn't care about the jews so they let it happen. The jewish people knew about it and therefore despised that these tax collectors would do this, especially in many cases to the OWN people.

Your question about the demons is one I asked myself when I read these two chapters. The demons beg bot to be cast into "the abyss". If we take this to refer to the abyss spoken of in Revelation 9:1 and 20:1-3 then I think they must be referring to Hell, which is their eventual prison just as it is the prison for anyone who dies apart from Christ. I think they must fully recognize that that is where they are headed and are begging Jesus not to send them yet. They had lived in a man among the tombs for years and I think they seemed to be totally fine dwelling among dead things. But regardless of where they ended up it was much better to them than in "the abyss".

I think the biggest part of the demon possesed man story is that when the demons came in contact with Jesus they bowed before him in submission and recognized him as the "Son of the Most High God"! They knew where all true authority comes from and they knew the power they had and the power of the one they served, Satan, was nothing compared to the power of God!

Great questions and comments! and ZACH, I have spoken to Paramount and a deal is in the works. Jim Caviezel will play Jesus! Look for that sometime int he summer of 2010!!!
